DID you know?

It is essential to pump out your septic tank every four years if you are a family with 4-6 members.  Inspect your septic tank once or twice a year to ensure no buildup can cause damage to your system.   Flushing disinfectants or old medicines down your toilet can affect the bacterial action of your septic tank, making it work ineffectively.  If you see effluent pooling near your seepage trench, it’s likely a warning sign that your septic system is clogged.  An unusual odor around your septic tank can be an indication that your septic system needs repair.  It is a good idea to plant grass in your drainage field. If you want to add plants, ensure to pick ones with shallow root systems.  Look at the grass around your septic tank. If you notice darker grass growing around the area, you should get your septic tank checked out.  If your septic system isn’t working correctly, it can lead to contaminated groundwater.
Do's
  • Understand where your septic tank and drain field are located. It is a great idea to keep a sketch of it handy with your maintenance record for service visits.
  • Keep your septic tank cover accessible for pumping and inspections.
  • Design a maintenance plan for your system by an authorized person. Have your septic system inspected annually.
  • Have a discharge filter installed on your septic tank to reduce the number of solids leaving the tank and increase your system's life.
Do's
  • It is a good idea to have your septic tank pumped out by a ROWP approximately every 3 to 5 years.
  • It is essential to immediately call a professional when you experience problems with your system or see any signs of system failure.
  • Maintain a detailed record of repairs, pumping, inspections, permits issued, and other maintenance activities.
Dont's
  • Don't access or enter a septic tank.
  • Don't use septic tank additives.
  • Do not throw sanitary tampons, cigarette butts, paper towels, condoms, disposable diapers, plastic, or similar non-biodegradable into your septic tank.
  • Don't dispose of cooking grease down the drains. It may solidify and clog pipes.
Dont's
  • Don't use chemicals to clean your drains.
  • Don't dispose of pharmaceuticals down your drains or toilets.
  • Don't allow vehicles to drive over the drain field area or park on it. Don't plant any trees or shrubs on or near the bed; their roots can clog pipes.
  • Don't install automatic lawn sprinklers in the area.
